EGS Marine Geology Expert Group Meeting | 4th EMODnet project meeting

The EGS Marine Geology Expert Group (MGEG) had its annual meeting back-to-back with the 4th EMODnet project meeting in Shengjin, Albania on 24th September. Altogether 19-member organizations were present at the meeting. Additionally the meeting was attended by Jennifer Valerius (BSH, Germany) and Valerii Rokitshkij (Ukranian PSRGE), who gave their presentations on national marine geological issues. Most of the meeting was spent on national reports, but we also discussed GeoERA and its marine parts and amongst other issues possible staff exchange and equipment inventories. The EMODnet project had its 4th project meeting in Shengjin Albania the last week in September. During the meeting the 75 participating delegates from 29 European countries decided upon activities to finalize the project according to set tender by April 2019. During the last six months of the project partners will deliver last updates on data and the work package leaders will update EMODnet Geology data products, such as the seabed substrate, sediment accumulation, bedrock stratigraphy and lithology, coastal behavior, geological events and susceptibility, and marine mineral maps into scale 1:100,000 or the best available scale. Additionally some new features will be released for the first time, such as; geomorphology, Quaternary geology, and submerged landscapes of the European continental shelves during various postglacial time slices. Horizon Europe – the next research and innovation framework programme

The Commission has published its proposal for Horizon Europe, an ambitious €100 billion research and innovation programme that will succeed Horizon 2020. The proposal was made as part of the EU’s proposal for the next EU long-term budget, the multiannual financial framework (MFF). Various building blocks were taken into account including the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020, the Lab-Fab-App report (informally the Lamy report), foresight studies and various other reports. Horizon Europe will incorporate policy missions to ensure the effectiveness of research and innovation funding by pursuing clearly defined targets. The Commission has engaged policy experts to develop studies, case studies and reports on how a mission-oriented policy approach will work. VERAM Final Conference

“EU Raw Materials 2050: Roadmap to Success” took place in Brussels on 17 April 2018. This Horizon2020 funded project brought together diverse stakeholders – including five European Technology Platforms (ETPs): Sustainable Minerals Resources, Forest, Construction, Sustainable Chemistry and Advanced Materials. The conference discussed the work of VERAM, its methodologies and its results including the launch of the “Research and Innovation Roadmap 2050: A Sustainable and Competitive Future for European Raw Materials”. EuroGEOSS is the European component of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) with a focus on coordinating and scaling up user-driven applications being developed in Europe. This GEO regional initiative aims to improve user uptake of Earth Observation data and improve forecasting capabilities for sound decision-making by governments for Europe’s benefit. The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) – a global effort to increase our understanding of Earth processes and improve forecasting. GEO is a partnership of more than 100 governments, 100 participating organisations and the European Commission. GEO implements GEOSS – decisions and actions for the benefit of humankind are informed by coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations. Central European National Geological Surveys’ Expert Workshop

Based on the conclusions from the Central European (CE) National Geological Surveys (NGS) Directors’ meeting in Maribor, May 2017, the State Geological Institute of Dionyz Stur initiated, hosted and organized on 22nd and 23rd November 2017 in Bratislava the first workshop of experts from the CE NGSs of Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. This event was attended by Secretary General of the EuroGeoSurveys, Slavko Solar as well. The purpose of the workshop was to find out the real potential and fighting power of the mentioned geological surveys. In total 41 foreign and Slovak experts presented the actual state of affaires and exchanged their experiences within four working groups for geological mapping, raw materials, hydrogeology including geothermal energy and geohazards. The findings and facts will be the subject of analysis and elaboration of recommendations for future prospective cooperation in Central Europe. ...
